Union Proposes Changes
An aldermanic committee convened Monday morning to once again consider the issue of instituting a civilian oversight board to review complaints against St. Louis police officers.
Neil Bruntrager, a lawyer for the St. Louis police union, appeared before the committee to offer changes to the controversial bill.
Under the proposed bill, a seven-person St. Louis Civilian Oversight Board would have the authority to investigate allegations of police misconduct; research and assess police policies, operations and procedures, and make findings and recommendations. It would also be able to independently review evidence and witness statements from investigations by police internal affairs. The board, which would have subpoena power, would report its findings to the city’s public safety director and police chief.
