POA pushes for health care trust fund

The San Antonio POA is aggressively fighting for a proposal that would allow the Association to create a health care trust fund. But last week lawyers representing the city in negotiations with the San Antonio Police Officers Association rejected the union’s proposal to take charge of its members’ health care but left the door open for the police association to offer a new proposal.
Had the city simply rejected the union’s proposal to create a health care trust fund and continued to demand that public safety personnel switch to civilian health care plans, negotiations likely would have broken down completely, with no clear path forward. The plan now is for the union to submit another proposal in June.
“They did not take the position of ‘the civilian plan or nothing,’” said Ron DeLord, the chief negotiator for the police union. “I’m cautiously optimistic. Like all negotiations, they’ll work themselves out.”
