Full-time release under attack
In Fort Wayne, Indiana, the city council exempted police officers and firefighters when it ended collective bargaining for city employees earlier this month. But there’s still a chance public-safety unions won’t entirely escape the fallout. Marty Bender, R-at large, told The News-Sentinel this week he is considering an ordinance that would prevent union officials from being paid with tax dollars — an ordinance that would affect the heads of Fort Wayne Professional Firefighters Local 124 and the Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association, which represents rank-and-file police officers. This line of attack has also been used in Arizona and other parts of the country as well. The interesting part of this story is that Bender is the deputy chief but not a union member.
