A Senseless Murder
By Tom Dominguez, President, Orange County Deputy Sheriffs Association
Downey Police Officer Ricardo “Ricky” Galvez was murdered last night while parked at the Downey Police Station. Galvez was a Marine and was deployed twice during Operation Enduring Freedom before joining the Downey Police Department, where he spent the last five years serving the residents of Downey.
There are not words to express the heartbreak of the loss of Officer Galvez. Our hearts have broken for far too many of our brothers and sisters in blue this year in the midst of anti-police sentiment being broadcast across the county. The senseless murder of Officer Galvez just adds to the already unbearable pain and stress we have endured as a law enforcement family and as human beings.
Vigilance has never been optional. But it has never been more important to remind ourselves to be vigilant. Watch your back and the backs of your partners. It is important to remember the vast majority of the people we are sworn to protect support us.
We will continue to protect and serve. We will continue to do our jobs regardless of the environment in which we must operate.
Each and every one of us deserves to come home safe at the end of every shift. Make sure that you do.
