A children’s library at the police station? Yup, you heard it right!
Law enforcement agencies and the associations representing its members have a good track record at thinking up interesting projects to help their communities. But this newest one from the Los Angeles Police Dept. is in a league of its own.
Last month, the LAPD’s 77th Street Area police station partnered up with a local non-profit, A Chance for Children, and opened up a library right in the middle of the lobby of the police station. Dubbed the “Little Free Library,” the police station lobby has been transformed into a gathering place where the kids, their parents and people from the neighborhood can share their favorite books and stories.
People are encouraged to stop by, pick up a book and bring back another book to share. 77th Street Area’s Little Free Library is registered in a National Registry and information about the unique community resource can be found online. The books, which are categorized by age group reading level, are free for children of all ages.
It’s expected The Little Free Library, which provides a place for neighbors to meet and get to know each other, will be a positive addition to the community. LAPD Cadets will serve as stewards of the library and police officers assigned to the station will be involved as well. The books will be re-stocked with donations from non-profit organizations, community members and LAPD officers.
