Show of Support
San Antonio’s first responders got a strong voice of support on the day the city filed a lawsuit against its police and fire unions. The Combined Law Enforcement Associations of Texas (CLEAT) accused the city of breaking its promise to the men and woman who risk their lives to keep the city safe.
“We mean business and we’re tired of the lies being put out in this state and the city, disparaging the lives of these officers. Everything that’s in the contract have been there for a reason. It was fully negotiated in full faith. And it was negotiated by City Manager Sheryl Sculley and her team,” said Charlie Wilkison, the executive director of CLEAT. On Sept. 30, the current city police and fire contracts expired.
However, an “evergreen clause” allows the contracts to remain valid for another 10 years. The city wants a court to rule on the constitutionality of the clause, arguing the city faces financial doom under the current structure of these contracts.
