Private prisons mount impressive counter-attack
One of the most effective lines of attack on prison profiteers like Corrections Corporation of America and GEO Group has been this – companies are in business to make money, so naturally, private prison companies will lobby lawmakers to put more people in jail regardless of whether crime is up or down. But now that for-profit prison operators have seen this line of attack work effectively against them, they’re deploying academics to make another effective argument. Considering the fact that corrections officers’ unions have been actively lobbying for “tough on crime” policies for as long as anyone can remember, does it really make any difference whether the lobbyists are working for public employees or private companies?
