Police Union Prez: Proposal is “Political Masturbation”
In Toronto City, Councillor Mike Layton wants the province to investigate “systematic racism” in the work of its police watchdog. But the head of the Toronto Police Association slammed Layton’s idea as “political masturbation.”
In a report by Shawn Jeffords of the Toronto Sun, Layton will introduce a motion calling on the province to look into how police oversight is conducted in Ontario, taking into account “systematic racism.”
He said the decision of the Special Investigations Unit not to charge officers involved in the shooting of Andrew Loku recently underscores the lack of trust in the system. He wants a new Anti-Racism directorate recently established by the Ontario government to review how the SIU conducts its work and how that relates to services like the Toronto Police.
But Toronto Police Association President Mike McCormack called Layton’s motion unnecessary.
“(The motion) is not based on any fact whatsoever or any inference that there is anything going on that would trigger such concerns,” McCormack said. “To me, it seems like an exercise in political masturbation. It’s based on an assumption that racial bias motivates the SIU to follow, or not follow, certain investigative avenues during a probe of a police service.”
