No Good Deed Goes Unpunished
For her role in saving a dog rescued from the ice cold Great Miami River last month, Miami County Sheriff’s Office (Ohio) Deputy Tina Waymire this month was verbally counseled for inappropriate behavior and for her radio traffic use.
According to a public records request, an inter-office memo states Waymire was verbally counseled on Feb. 6 by her department supervisors for inappropriate behavior and radio traffic when she responded to the scene of an animal complaint on Jan. 12. The call was in regards to a dog in the river near the Adams Street Bridge in the city of Troy limits.
According to the Troy Daily News, the memo stated, “Waymire responded to a call in the city of Troy without being requested or getting approval. Waymire’s behavior at the scene and her radio traffic were unprofessional. Troy Fire rescued the dog. Waymire transported the dog to the vet in the back of her cruiser while running 27 (lights and sirens).”
The memo states the action taken was a verbal counseling and a supervisor played the audio of Waymire’s radio traffic for her to understand what was inappropriate. She was also counseled about the sheriff’s office escort policy and the fact the roads were ice covered on the day she ran full lights and sirens while transporting the dog to the vet.
“She may have violated some things, but we did not discipline her, ” said Chief Deputy Dave Duchak on Friday. “Her sergeant, Sgt. Todd Tennant, went to his lieutenant, Lt. Tom Wheeler, after it had happened because dispatch had complained about her radio traffic. She inserted herself in a situation that she hadn’t been requested to go. Then she ran on emergency run to the Stoneyridge vet — with schools on a two-hour delay — 19-20 miles per hour higher than the speed limit.”
