Drivers with cells killing too many people
It’s a growing problem that police in many areas are struggling to stop. The most recent effort is happening in Canada. Responding to the alarming news that over a three year period using a hand-held device and engaging in other forms of distraction while driving has taken the lives of more innocent people than impaired driving, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) launched a “Distracted Driving” campaign.
During the March 8-14 campaign, many of the agencies 7500 sworn personnel worked hard to educate motorists about the dangers of using a phone while driving. They also warned the citizens that March 18, 2014, a new law kicked in that requires officers to issue much heftier fines to those caught using a cell or smart phone, watching TV or a movie or playing a video game while driving. Distracted driving fines will increase from $155 to $280 which includes the $225 fine plus a $50 victim fine surcharge and $5 court cost.
In the Province 11 people have died so far this year in distracted driving related collisions. The total number of distracted driving citations issued so far this year in the province of Ontario is over 4000.

PS: One effective way for your association to develop closer relationships with the community you serve is to do public service related activities. This video is a powerful piece to keep people from texting and driving. Put it up on your website and show it at your local library or police station /headquarters to be followed by a discussion.
