Chicago FOP elects new president
Dean Angelo Sr., a detective with the Chicago Police Department has been elected president of the Chicago Fraternal Order of Police. Dean beat the acting president of the union, Bill Dougherty, by a vote of 5,021 to 4,548.
It was the first runoff election anyone could remember the FOP ever holding. Angelo and Dougherty were the finalists in a field of five candidates in a general election held last month.
Dougherty has been acting as president of the FOP since Mike Shields was suspended and removed from office in December. Shields was a controversial leader who caused an uproar among the members and the state FOP when he accused local and state FOP leaders of working with City Hall to fix past police contracts.
Shields also had to apologize to members last year for paperwork mistakes that denied his members their automatic right to a retroactive pay raise. FOP members have been working under the provisions of a contract that expired on June 30, 2012. The union is negotiating a new contract.
