A Leader With Guts
For some police association officials, racism, homophobia, and sexism are the kinds of things that are better left unspoken.
But that’s not the case with Seattle Police Guild President Ron Smith.
After seeing some of the more colorful suggestions from some of the rank and file in the association’s newsletter.
The Guardian newsletter, has previously described efforts to address racial profiling as “socialist policies” from “the enemy” and argued that officers should be able to call citizens “bitch” and “n***a.”
At that point Mr. Smith decided to speak up and spoke very directly to the officers that say they feel and have felt “under seige” by liberals, the media, and the public, among others.
“We are held to a higher standard by those who entrust us with their safety and who call us when they need help in their darkest hour,” Smith wrote on the Guild’s Facebook page. “The more apolitical we can be, the smoother the path forward shall be.”
“You applied here, and you have to treat people all the same,” said Ron Smith, president of the Seattle Police Officers Guild. “You have to serve the community. If you don’t like the politics here, then leave and go to a place that serves your worldview.”
Will this lead to amass exodus of Seattle officers looking for a city or county more in line with their views?
It’s anyone’s guess.
